Natural Disaster Zentangle
October 6, 2017 Micron Pens and Watercolor This project was originally based on a flood, but as I created it I decided to make it less specific and more about a general storm. I was inspired by the flooding caused by Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria recently. I was successful in incorporating zentangles into my piece, as well as more realistic elements such as the sky and foreground. I most struggled with using watercolor to create the effect of flood water, and overall making the image look like a flood. I got a lot of feedback about how it didn't look like a flood, which was very frustrating. Many people thought it looked more like a desert after a storm than a flood. I want my design to remind people that there is beauty even in the midst of natural disasters. |
Surrealist Collage November 1, 2017 Photoshop For this project, I decided to work from a memory I hold very dear to me: for a good portion of my life I spent two weeks every summer at Girl Scout Camp with my close friend. When I was there last, I met an incredible group of girls and made incredible memories that I will never forget. I chose this memory because it was incredibly impactful for me. I was most inspired by the memory itself, but I also drew inspiration from other artists. I particularly like the work of Dali, in particular his Birth of Liquid Desires. I think in this project I was the most successful I have ever been in using Photoshop, and learned many new and valuable skills. I struggled most with coming up with an idea that I felt I could successfully convey through Photoshop. After looking at my work, I want people to learn that it is important to hold on to people and memories that have had a great impact on their lives. |
Visual Ending to a Story
December 8, 2017 Photoshop For this assignment, we were asked to describe the ending to a story, and I chose the story about a scientist that immediately regrets her discovery. I chose this one because as we were hearing the story I had a clear image in my head of how the ending would look. My image depicts a scientist being thrown backwards by an explosion from the experiment she was working on. For this piece I chose to draw the majority of it rather than use existing images because I was not sure that I would be able to find images that could successfully show what I wanted to show. I think I was successful in this, and the pieces that I drew look three dimensional, and are proportional and colored correctly. The same thing that I was successful in was also a challenge. Matching colors and drawing on Photoshop rather than using existing images was difficult and frustrating, but rewarding in the end. |
Visual Ending to a Story
May 11, 2018 Photoshop This project was very similar to one we did earlier in the year, only with different prompts. This time I chose the second prompt: You've been living a ghost town for 23 years, and one day you reach the edge of town and can see a large blue box that says "rerolpxE tenretnI." I modified the prompt because when an image popped into my head it was slightly different, featuring a blue box saying "start game" rather than "rerolpxE tenretnI," and from there I developed the piece around a non traditional ghost town, using an image from the Chernobyl disaster. I chose this prompt because it was more interesting to me and I thought it could go in many directions that I could reasonably create in Photoshop. I didn't totally continue the story, but more just illustrated my take on it. If the story was continued it would probably be an image of what happens after the game starts, like a path appearing on the ground to lead the character on a journey. |
